We've waited a long time for this one to come to the market in the US. Now that it's finally available we can expect some exciting changes in the publishing industry too.

At $299 the hardware price is considerably more than we expected. But from what we've seen so far, it's worth it. In time we'll enjoy the savings of downloading new books to read instead of ordering shipments of paper versions, and in time the publishers will realize we know the difference.

It may cost as much to "produce" a digital book as a paper one, but it does not cost as much to "reproduce" them a thousand times over the internet. The price to the reader will come down if we insist on it. Prices of many electronic texts are already available at half the cost of their shelf-storage cousins.

Most of the list of free eBook texts that come with Sony Style's Digital Reader may seem like chewing yesterday's gum -- they give you access to 100 titles in the "Classics" library for free when you sign up with Sony Connect! (but only if you purchase the Digital Reader before 1/31/08).

We think it's a great way to practice finding and downloading titles, and learning to use the Digital Reader hardware in that format. Take a look at the rest of the titles they offer at eBooks.Connect.com

Some of us will be looking for other formats, too. The list of usable formats: Adobe PDF10, RTF, TXT, BBeB and Microsoft Word, really opens up the field. Be sure to watch this site for more information.
