This deep south story is told from the perspective of a character beginning in the depression era as a boy whose father is the local Constable.
When young Harry and his sister stumble upon the first of a series of brutally murdered local women, Harry's relationship with his father begins a period of profound change. The story is a combination of well presented mystery combined with a boy coming of age, and though it might seem a little overdone in a few places, Lansdale does an admirable job of keeping with the mood of the times in which the story takes place.
Those who enjoyed the classic tale of "Chiefs" by Stuart Woods will be quick to add "The Bottoms" to their library.
